Compounds in this family bind to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels found in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells with great affinity. This causes an increase in the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, as well as hyperpolarization of the nerve or muscle cell, resulting in parasite paralysis and death.
